Eckels Drugstore was opened in 1879
by pharmacists, Walter Eckels, and his
brother George Morris Eckels, who
was also a physician. George's
daughter, Mabelle, a licensed pharmacist,
took over the store in 1929 and completed
the renovations that are seen in the
store today. The pharmacy in the back
of the store no longer fills prescriptions,
but has evolved into a small museum
featuring pharmacy items dating as
far back as the 1800s.
In 1999, Hollywood came to Central
Pennsylvania, and Eckels Drugstore
became the set for an emotional scene
in Columbia Pictures' "Girl, Interrupted."
Photos and set designs from the filming
session can be found in the museum, in
addition to the jars full of candy above the
soda fountain left behind by the film crew.
